Diese Zahlen erlauben dem Kompass, Azimute oder Lager zu zeigen, die gemeinhin in dieser Notation angegeben sind. Der magnetische Kompass wurde zum ersten Mal als eine Vorrichtung zur Wahrsagerei erfunden, so früh wie die chinesische Han-Dynastie. Der Kompass wurde in der Song-Dynastie China durch das Militär für Navigations-Orientierungslauf von 1040-1044 verwendet und wurde für die Schifffahrt von 1111 bis 1117 benutzt.
