Melanin
Melanin i / mɛlənɪn / ist ein breiter Begriff für eine Gruppe von natürlichen Pigmenten in den meisten Organismen gefunden. Melanin wird durch die Oxidation des Aminosäure-Tyrosins hergestellt, gefolgt von der Polymerisation. Das Pigment wird in einer spezialisierten Gruppe von als Melanozyten bekannten Zellen produziert. Es gibt drei grundlegende Arten von Melanin: Eumelanin, Pheomelanin und Neuromelanin. Der häufigste Typ ist Eumelanin und wird in "schwarzen" und "braunen" Subtypen produziert. Pheomelanin ist ein Cystein-haltiges rotbraunes Polymer von Benzothiazin-Einheiten, die weitgehend für rote Haare und Sommersprossen verantwortlich sind. Neuromelanin findet sich im Gehirn, obwohl seine Funktion dunkel bleibt. Die Produktion von Melanin heißt Melanogenese. In der Haut tritt Melanogenese nach Exposition gegenüber UV-Strahlung auf, wodurch die Haut sichtbar bräunen kann. Melanin ist ein wirksamer Absorber des Lichts; Das Pigment ist in der Lage, über 99,9% der absorbierten UV-Strahlung zu zerstreuen. Wegen dieser Eigenschaft wird Melanin gedacht, um Hautzellen vor UVB-Strahlenschäden zu schützen, wodurch das Krebsrisiko reduziert wird.
