Der Meniskus ist die Kurve in der Oberseite einer Flüssigkeit nahe der Oberfläche des Behälters oder eines anderen Gegenstandes, verursacht durch Oberflächenspannung. Es kann entweder konvex oder konkav sein, abhängig von der Flüssigkeit und der Oberfläche. Ein konvexer Meniskus tritt auf, wenn die Partikel in der Flüssigkeit eine stärkere Anziehung zueinander haben als zu dem Material des Behälters. Konvexe Menisken treten beispielsweise zwischen Quecksilber und Glas in Barometern und Thermometern auf. Umgekehrt tritt ein konkaver Meniskus auf, wenn die Partikel der Flüssigkeit stärker an den Behälter angezogen werden als zueinander, wodurch die Flüssigkeit die Wände des Behälters klettern kann. Dies geschieht zwischen Wasser und Glas.
