Mikroorganismus
Ein Mikroorganismus ist ein mikroskopischer Organismus, der ein einzelner Zell- oder mehrzelliger Organismus sein kann. Das Studium der Mikroorganismen heißt Mikrobiologie, ein Thema, das mit Antonie van Leeuwenhoeks Entdeckung von Mikroorganismen im Jahre 1675 begann, mit einem Mikroskop seines eigenen Designs. Mikroorganismen sind sehr vielfältig und umfassen alle Bakterien und Archaea und fast alle Protozoen. Dazu gehören auch einige Mitglieder der Pilze, Algen und Tiere wie Rotiferen. Viele Makrotiere und Pflanzen haben juvenile Stadien, die auch Mikroorganismen sind. Einige Mikrobiologen klassifizieren auch Viren als Mikroorganismen, aber andere betrachten diese als nicht lebendig. Die meisten Mikroorganismen sind mikroskopisch, aber es gibt einige Bakterien wie Thiomargarita namibiensis und einige Protozoen wie Stentor, die makroskopisch und sichtbar für das bloße Auge sind. Mikroorganismen leben in jedem Teil der Biosphäre einschließlich Boden, heiße Quellen, auf dem Meeresboden, hoch in der Atmosphäre und tiefe Innere Felsen innerhalb der Erdkruste. Mikroorganismen sind entscheidend für das Nährstoff-Recycling in Ökosystemen, da sie als Zersetzer wirken.
