Während Diskettenlaufwerke noch einige begrenzte Verwendungszwecke haben, vor allem bei Legacy-Industrie-Computer-Equipment, wurden sie durch Datenspeicher-Methoden mit viel größerer Kapazität, wie USB-Flash-Laufwerke, tragbare externe Festplatten, optische Discs, Speicherkarten und Computer-Netzwerken ersetzt .
