Claudio Giovanni Antonio Monteverdi (italienisch: 15. Mai 1567 (getauft) - 29. November 1643) war ein italienischer Komponist, Gambist, Sänger und römisch-katholischer Priester. Monteverdis Arbeit, die oft als revolutionär angesehen wurde, markierte den Übergang vom Renaissance-Stil der Musik zum Barock. Er entwickelte zwei individuelle Stile der Komposition - das Erbe der Renaissance-Polyphonie und die neue Basso-Continuo-Technik des Barocks. Monteverdi schrieb eine der frühesten Opern, L'Orfeo, eine innovative Arbeit, die die früheste überlebende Oper ist, die noch regelmäßig durchgeführt wird.
