Mudflat
Mudflats oder Schlammwohnungen, auch bekannt als Wattflächen, sind Küstenfeuchtgebiete, die sich bilden, wenn der Schlamm durch Gezeiten oder Flüsse abgelagert wird. Sie finden sich in geschützten Gebieten wie Buchten, Bucht, Lagunen und Flussmündungen. Mudflats können geologisch als exponierte Schichten von Buchtschlamm betrachtet werden, die sich aus der Ablagerung von Mündungssilzen, Tonen und marinen tierischen Detritus ergeben. Die meisten Sedimente innerhalb eines Mudflats befinden sich innerhalb der intertiden Zone, und so ist die Wohnung untergetaucht und etwa zweimal täglich ausgesetzt. In der Vergangenheit wurden die Wattflächen als ungesunde, wirtschaftlich unwichtige Gebiete betrachtet und wurden oft in landwirtschaftliche Flächen ausgegraben und entwickelt. Mehrere besonders flache Wälder, wie das Wattenmeer, sind heute beliebt bei denen, die den Sport des Wanderns wandern. An der Ostseeküste von Deutschland an Orten werden die Wälder nicht durch Gezeitenwirkung ausgesetzt, sondern durch das Windwasser, das Wasser von den Untiefen ins Meer fährt. Diese windbetroffenen Wattlöcher heißen Windwatt auf Deutsch.
