Klebrige Materialien wie Schlamm können an der glatten äußeren Reifenoberfläche haften, während glatte lose Gegenstände wie Steine vorübergehend in die Laufflächenrillen eingebettet werden können, während der Reifen über den Boden rollt. Diese Materialien können von der Oberfläche des Reifens mit hoher Geschwindigkeit ausgestoßen werden, da der Reifen den angebrachten Objekten kinetische Energie verleiht. Für ein Fahrzeug, das sich vorwärts bewegt, dreht sich die Oberseite des Reifens nach oben und nach vorne und kann Gegenstände in die Luft bei anderen Fahrzeugen oder Fußgängern vor dem Fahrzeug werfen. In britischem Englisch heißt der Kotflügel den Flügel.
