Mussel ist der gemeinsame Name für Mitglieder von mehreren Familien von Muscheln oder Bivalvia Mollusca, aus Salzwasser und Süßwasser Lebensräume verwendet. Diese Gruppen haben gemeinsam eine Schale, deren Umriß langgestreckt und asymmetrisch ist, verglichen mit anderen essbaren Muscheln, die oft mehr oder weniger abgerundet oder oval sind. Das Wort "Muschel" wird am häufigsten verwendet, um die essbaren Muscheln der maritimen Familie Mytilidae zu bedeuten, von denen die meisten an exponierten Ufern in der Zwischenzone leben, die durch ihre starken Bordfäden an einem festen Substrat befestigt sind. Einige Arten haben kolonisierte hydrothermische Entlüftungen mit tiefen Ozeankämmen verbunden. Bei den meisten Muscheln ist die Schale länger als breit, keilförmig oder asymmetrisch. Die äußere Farbe der Schale ist oft dunkelblau, schwärzlich oder braun, während der Innenraum silbrig und etwas perlmutt ist. Der gemeine Name "Muschel" wird auch für viele Süßwasser-Muscheln verwendet, darunter die Süßwasser-Perlmuscheln. Süßwasser-Miesmuschelspezies bewohnen Seen, Teiche, Flüsse, Bäche, Kanäle, und sie sind in einer anderen Unterklasse von Muscheln klassifiziert, trotz einiger sehr oberflächlicher Ähnlichkeiten im Aussehen.

Die Zebramuschel, Dreissena polymorpha, kann in Wasserleitungen eine ernsthafte Störung sein.
