Nestorius
Nestorius war Erzbischof von Konstantinopel vom 10. April 428 bis August 431, als der Kaiser Theodosius II. Seine Verurteilung durch den Rat von Ephesus am 22. Juni bestätigte. Seine Lehren beinhalteten eine Ablehnung des langwierigen Titels von Theotokos, "Mutter Gottes", für Maria, Mutter Jesu, und wurden von vielen missverstanden, um zu implizieren, dass er nicht glaubte, dass Christus wirklich Gott war. Dies brachte ihn in Konflikt mit anderen prominenten Kirchenmännern der Zeit, vor allem Cyril von Alexandria, die er der Ketzerei beschuldigte. Aber die Kirche des Ostens nahm seine Verurteilung nicht an.
