Für die Kapitalbudgetierung verwendet und weit verbreitet in der Volkswirtschaft, Finanzen und Rechnungswesen verwendet, misst es die Überschuss oder Fehlbetrag der Cashflows, in Gegenwart Wert, über die Kosten der Mittel. NPV kann als "Differenzbetrag" zwischen den Summen der diskontierten: Mittelzuflüsse und Mittelabflüsse beschrieben werden.
