Nicias
Nicias, oder Nikias, war ein athenischer Politiker und General während der Zeit des Peloponnesischen Krieges. Nicias war ein Mitglied der athenischen Aristokratie, weil er ein großes Vermögen von seinem Vater geerbt hatte, das in die Silberminen um Atticas Mt. investiert wurde. Sein Hauptziel war es, einen Frieden mit Sparta zu schließen, sobald er zu den für Athen günstigen Bedingungen erreicht werden konnte. Er wurde häufig gewählt, um als strategos für Athen während des Peloponnesischen Krieges zu dienen. Er führte mehrere Expeditionen, die wenig erreichten. Trotzdem war er weitgehend verantwortlich für die erfolgreichen Verhandlungen, die 421 v.Chr. Zum Frieden von Nicias führten. Nach dem Frieden widersprach er den ehrgeizigen Plänen von Alcibiades, die Interessen Athens zu fördern. Trotzdem wurde Nicias ernannt, um an der athenischen Invasion von Sizilien teilzunehmen.
