Nikolaus von Kues, auch Nicolaus Cusanus und Nikolaus von Cusa genannt, war ein deutscher Philosoph, Theologe, Jurist und Astronom. Einer der ersten deutschen Befürworter des Renaissance-Humanismus, machte er spirituelle und politische Beiträge in der europäischen Geschichte. Ein bemerkenswertes Beispiel dafür sind seine mystischen oder spirituellen Schriften über "gelehrte Unwissenheit" sowie seine Teilnahme an Machtkämpfen zwischen Rom und den deutschen Staaten des Heiligen Römischen Reiches. Päpstlichen Legaten nach Deutschland von 1446, wurde er zum Kardinal für seine Verdienste von Papst Nikolaus V im Jahre 1448 und Prince-Bischof von Brixen zwei Jahre später ernannt. 1459 wurde er Generalvikar in den päpstlichen Staaten.

Nicholas of Kues, also referred to as Nicolaus Cusanus and Nicholas of Cusa, was a German philosopher, theologian, jurist, and astronomer. One of the first German proponents of Renaissance humanism, he made spiritual and political contributions in European history. A notable example of this is his mystical or spiritual writings on "learned ignorance," as well as his participation in power struggles between Rome and the German states of the Holy Roman Empire. Papal legate to Germany from 1446, he was appointed cardinal for his merits by Pope Nicholas V in 1448 and Prince–Bishop of Brixen two years later. In 1459 he became vicar general in the Papal States.
