Nucleoid
Das Nukleoid ist ein unregelmäßig geformter Bereich innerhalb der Zelle eines Prokaryoten, der alle oder das meiste des genetischen Materials enthält. Im Gegensatz zum Kern einer eukaryotischen Zelle ist sie nicht von einer Kernmembran umgeben. Das Genom der prokaryotischen Organismen ist im Allgemeinen ein kreisförmiges, doppelsträngiges DNA-Stück, von dem mehrere Exemplare jederzeit existieren können. Die Länge eines Genoms variiert stark, aber im Allgemeinen ist mindestens ein paar Millionen Basenpaare. Wie bei allen Zellorganismen ist die Länge der DNA-Moleküle von bakteriellen und archäischen Chromosomen im Vergleich zu den Dimensionen der Zelle sehr groß, und die genomischen DNA-Moleküle müssen kompaktiert werden.
