Ein ogive ist das rund verjüngte Ende eines zweidimensionalen oder dreidimensionalen Objekts. Villard de Honnecourt, ein Wanderer aus dem 11. Jahrhundert aus der Picardie im Norden Frankreichs, war der erste Schriftsteller, der das Wort ogiv einsetzte. Die OED betrachtet den Ursprung des französischen Begriffs; Es könnte aus dem späten lateinischen obviata kommen, dem weiblichen, vollkommenen passiven Partizip der obviare, um zu widerstehen, d.h. die Bögen, die der nach unten gerichteten Kraft der Strukturmasse widerstehen.
