In der vorreformierten Kirche ist ein Pfarrer der Priester einer unabhängigen Pfarrkirche, dh eine Pfarrkirche, die nicht unter der Kontrolle einer größeren kirchlichen oder klösterlichen Organisation steht. Der Begriff ähnelt dem Rektor und steht im Gegensatz zu einem Pfarrer, einem Kleriker, dessen Einkommen in der Regel zumindest teilweise von einer größeren Organisation angeeignet wird. Heute wird der Begriff gewöhnlich für einige Pfarrkleriker von nicht-römisch-katholischen Kirchen verwendet, insbesondere in der anglikanischen Tradition, in der ein Pfarrer der Oberbefehlshaber eines Pfarrers ist: ein Pfarrer oder ein Rektor; In diesem Sinne kann ein Pfarrer mit einem Pfarrer verglichen werden. Der Titel Pfarrer kann auf Klerus aus bestimmten anderen protestantischen Konfessionen angewendet werden. Ein Pfarrer ist oft in einem kirchlichen Haus untergebracht, das als Pfarrhaus bekannt ist.
