Die fünf Patriarchen der Pentarchie saßen in Rom, Konstantinopel, Alexandrien, Antiochien und Jerusalem. Der Ost-West-Schisma von 1054 spaltete den lateinischsprachigen See von Rom von den vier griechischsprachigen Patriarchaten, die verschiedene römisch-katholische und östlich-orthodoxe Kirchen bilden. Der östlich-orthodoxe Patriarch von Antiochien zog nach Damaskus im 13. Jahrhundert, während der Herrschaft der ägyptischen Mameluken, Eroberer von Syrien. In Damaskus war eine christliche Gemeinde seit apostolischen Zeiten gedeihen.
