Ein picrate ist ein Salz oder ein Ester von Pikrinsäure. Aber es könnte auch eine zusätzliche Verbindung sein, welche Pikrinsäure mit vielen aromatischen Kohlenwasserstoffen, aromatischen Aminen, aliphatischen Aminen, Alkalinen und anderen Verbindungen bildet. Diese zusätzlichen Verbindungen werden auch picrates genannt, obwohl sie kein Salz von Pikrinsäure sind. Das picrate-Ion hat gelbe Farbe. Viele picrates sind Sprengstoffe, zB Ammoniumpikrat. Einige werden als primäre Sprengstoffe verwendet, nämlich Bleipikrat oder Kaliumpikrat, die ihre Verwendung als Primer für Patronenmunition finden. Ferrous picrate wird in einigen Anwendungen als Diesel-Kraftstoff-Additiv verwendet, um eine bessere Laufleistung zu erzielen. Picvate von einigen Metallen neigen dazu, deutlich empfindlicher auf Stoß, Reibung und Schock als Pikrinsäure selbst zu sein. Infolgedessen wird die Lagerung von Pikrinsäure in Metallbehältern aufgrund des hohen Risiko einer versehentlichen Explosion stark entmutigt.
