Polygonaceae
Die Polygonaceae sind eine Familie von Blütenpflanzen, die informell als die Knöterichfamilie oder die Gusseisen-Buchweizenfamilie in den Vereinigten Staaten bekannt sind. Der Name basiert auf der Gattung Polygonum und wurde von Antoine Laurent de Jussieu im Jahre 1789 in seinem Buch Genera Plantarum verwendet. Der Name bezieht sich auf die vielen geschwollenen Knoten, die die Stämme einiger Arten haben. Es ist aus dem Griechischen abgeleitet; Poly bedeutet viele und goni bedeutet Knie oder Gelenk. Die Polygonaceen umfassen etwa 1200 Arten, die in etwa 50 Gattungen verteilt sind. Die größten Gattungen sind Eriogonum (240 Arten), Rumex (200 Arten), Coccoloba (120 Arten), Persicaria (100 Arten) und Calligonum (80 Arten). Die Familie ist weltweit präsent, ist aber am vielfältigsten in der Nord-Temperierten Zone. Mehrere Arten werden als Zierpflanzen angebaut. Ein paar Arten von Triplaris bieten Holz. Die Frucht der Seekresse (Coccoloba uvifera) wird gegessen, und in Florida wird Jelly daraus hergestellt und kommerziell verkauft. Die Samen von zwei Arten von Fagopyrum, bekannt als Buchweizen (Sarrasin in Französisch), liefern Getreide (seine dunklen Mehl ist bekannt als blé noir (schwarzer Weizen) in Frankreich).
