Polynesien
Polynesien ist eine Subregion von Ozeanien, bestehend aus über 1.000 Inseln, die über den zentralen und südlichen Pazifischen Ozean verstreut sind. Die Ureinwohner, die die Inseln Polynesiens bewohnen, werden Polynesier genannt und teilen sich viele ähnliche Merkmale wie Sprache, Kultur und Glauben. Historisch gesehen waren sie erfahrene Segler und benutzten Sterne, um in der Nacht zu navigieren. Der Begriff "Polynesien" wurde erstmals 1756 vom französischen Schriftsteller Charles de Brosses benutzt und ursprünglich auf alle Inseln des Pazifiks angewendet. Im Jahre 1831 schlug Jules Dumont d'Urville eine Beschränkung seiner Verwendung während eines Vortrags an die Geographische Gesellschaft von Paris vor.
