Katar, offiziell der Staat Katar, ist ein souveränes arabisches Land, das sich in Westasien befindet und die kleine Katar-Halbinsel an der nordöstlichen Küste der viel größeren Arabischen Halbinsel besetzt. Seine einzige Landgrenze ist mit Saudi-Arabien im Süden, mit dem Rest seines Territoriums, umgeben von dem Persischen Golf. Nach osmanischer Herrschaft wurde es ein britisches Protektorat im frühen 20. Jahrhundert, bis es 1971 Unabhängigkeit gewann. Katar ist seit der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts von der Familie Al Thani beherrscht worden. Im Jahr 1995 wurde Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani zu Emir, als er seinen Vater, Khalifa bin Hamad Al Thani, in einem friedlichen Staatsstreich ablegte, nur um später zu seinem Sohn Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani im Juni zu gehen 2013. Katar's halbgewählte Majlis al Shura hat eine sehr beschränkte Gesetzgebungsbefugnis, um Gesetze zu erlassen und zu genehmigen. Katar hat die konservativste Gesellschaft im GCC nach Saudi-Arabien. Die meisten Kataris gehören zur strengen Wahhabiten-Sekte des Islam.
