Redpoll
Die Redpolls sind eine Gruppe von kleinen Passerine Vögel in der Fink-Familie Fringillidae, die charakteristische rote Markierungen auf dem Kopf haben. Sie wurden früher in die Gattung Acanthis zusammen mit den Linnets und die Twite gesetzt, aber ihre engsten Verwandten sind eigentlich die Kreuzschnabel, die in der Gattung Loxia platziert sind. Die letztere Gattung könnte mit Carduelis in einer einzigen Gattung verschmolzen werden, für die der Name Loxia dann Priorität hätte. Aber das würde bedeuten, den Namen einer großen Anzahl von Arten zu ändern, und da ihre Anpassungen und Biogeographie evolutionär ganz eigenartig sind, wäre es besser, Acanthis stattdessen wieder einzusetzen, auch nur die Redpolls. Es gibt mehrere verschiedene sehr eng verwandte Formen von Redpolls, die als etwas von einer bis fünf Arten betrachtet werden könnten. Jüngste Studien neigen dazu, drei Arten zu unterstützen, aber das ist sicher nicht definitiv. Alle Redpolls sind nördliche Zuchtwälderarten, die mit Birken verbunden sind. Sie sind kleine Vögel, braun oder graubraun oben und mit einem roten Stirnpatch.
