Es gibt zwei Haupttheorien über die Art und Weise, in der Zeichen die Fähigkeit erwerben, Informationen zu übertragen; Beide Theorien verstehen die definierende Eigenschaft des Zeichens als eine Beziehung zwischen einer Anzahl von Elementen. In der von Ferdinand de Saussure entwickelten Tradition der Semiotik ist die Zeichenrelation dyadisch, die nur aus einer Form des Zeichens und ihrer Bedeutung besteht.
