Ria
Ein ria ist ein Küsteneingang, der durch das partielle Untertauchen eines unglasierten Flusstals gebildet wird. Es ist ein ertrunkenes Flusstal, das offen für das Meer bleibt. Typischerweise haben Rias eine dendritische, treelartige Umrisse, obwohl sie gerade und ohne signifikante Zweige sein können. Dieses Muster wird aus dem dendritischen Drainagemuster des überfluteten Flusstals vererbt. Das Ertrinken der Flusstäler entlang einer Küstenstrecke und die Bildung von Rias führt zu einer äußerst unregelmäßigen und eingerückten Küstenlinie. Oft gibt es Inseln, die Gipfel von teilweise untergetauchten, vorbestehenden Hügelspitzen sind. Eine Ria-Küste ist eine Küstenlinie mit mehreren parallelen Rias, die durch markante Kämme getrennt sind, die eine Distanz im Landesinneren erstrecken. Die Meeresspiegelveränderung, die das Untertauchen eines Flusstals verursacht hat, kann entweder eustatisch oder isostatisch sein. Das Ergebnis ist oft eine sehr große Mündung an der Mündung eines relativ unbedeutenden Flusses. Die Kingsbridge-Mündung in Devon, England, ist ein äußerstes Beispiel für eine Ria, die eine Mündung bildet, die der Größe ihres Flusses unverhältnismäßig ist; Kein bedeutender fluss fließt hinein, nur eine kleine kleine ströme.
