Nicht-Rivalität bedeutet nicht, dass die Gesamtproduktionskosten niedrig sind, aber dass die Grenzproduktionskosten null sind. In Wirklichkeit sind nur wenige Güter völlig nicht konkurrierend, da Rivalität auf bestimmten Ebenen entstehen kann. Zum Beispiel ist der Straßengebrauch bis zu einer bestimmten Kapazität nicht konkurrenzfähig, nach der Stauung bedeutet, dass jeder zusätzliche Benutzer die Geschwindigkeit für andere verringert. Dafür sieht die jüngste ökonomische Theorie die Rivalität als Kontinuum, nicht in der binären Kategorie, wo viele Güter irgendwo zwischen den beiden Extremen von völlig konkurrierend und völlig nicht-rivalisierenden sind. Die meisten greifbaren Waren, sowohl langlebig als auch nutzbar, sind konkurrierende Waren. Ein Hammer ist ein langlebiger Konkurrent gut.
