Rosenkreuzer ist eine philosophische Geheimgesellschaft, die im spätmittelalterlichen Deutschland von Christian Rosenkreuz gegründet worden ist. Es handelt sich um eine Lehre oder Theologie, die auf esoterischen Wahrheiten der alten Vergangenheit aufgebaut ist, die "von dem Durchschnittsmenschen verborgen sind, Einsicht in die Natur, das physische Universum und das geistige Reich" geben. Rosenkreuzer wird durch das Rosige Kreuz symbolisiert. Zwischen 1607 und 1616 wurden zwei anonyme Manifeste veröffentlicht, zuerst in Deutschland und später in ganz Europa. Das waren die Fama Fraternitatis RC und die Confessio Fraternitatis. Der Einfluß dieser Dokumente, die einen "höchst lobenden Orden" von Mystiker-Philosophen-Ärzten darstellte und eine "universelle Reformation der Menschheit" förderte, führte zu einer Begeisterung, die von ihrem Historiker Dame Frances Yates die "Rosenkreuzer-Aufklärung" genannt wurde. Rosenkreuzer war mit dem Protestantismus verbunden, und die Manifeste widersetzten sich dem römischen Katholizismus und seiner Präferenz für das Dogma über den Empirismus. Sie verfolgten ihre Philosophie und ihre Wissenschaft den Mauren und behaupteten, dass es seit 120 Jahren geheimgehalten worden sei, bis das intellektuelle Klima es empfangen könnte.
