Natürliches Gummi
Naturkautschuk, auch Indien-Kautschuk oder Kautschuk genannt, besteht zunächst aus Polymeren der organischen Verbindung Isopren mit geringfügigen Verunreinigungen anderer organischer Verbindungen plus Wasser. Formen von Polyisopren, die als natürliche Kautschuke nützlich sind, werden als Elastomere klassifiziert. Derzeit wird Gummi hauptsächlich in Form des Latex von bestimmten Bäumen geerntet. Der Latex ist ein klebriges, milchiges Kolloid, das durch Einschnitt in die Rinde abgezogen und die Flüssigkeit in Gefäßen in einem Prozess namens "Klopfen" gesammelt wird. Der Latex wird dann in Gummi fertig für kommerzielle Verarbeitung verfeinert. Naturkautschuk wird ausgiebig in vielen Anwendungen und Produkten verwendet, entweder allein oder in Kombination mit anderen Materialien. In den meisten seiner nützlichen Formen hat es ein großes Streckverhältnis, hohe Elastizität und ist extrem wasserdicht.
