Meere sind in der Regel größer als Seen und enthalten Salzwasser statt Süßwasser, aber einige geographische Einheiten, die als "Meere" bekannt sind, sind inländische Gewässer, die nicht salzig sind, eingeschlossen: So ist das Meer von Galiläa ein Süßwassersee. Das Gesetz des Meeres besagt, dass der ganze Ozean "Meer" ist.
