Die Septuaginta / sɛptjuːəˌdʒɪnt /, / sɛptuːəˌdʒɪnt /, / ˌsɛptuːədʒɪnt /, / sɛptʃuːəˌdʒɪnt /, aus dem lateinischen Wort septuaginta, ist eine Übersetzung der hebräischen Bibel und einige verwandte Texte in Koine Griechisch. Der Titel und seine römische Ziffer Akronym LXX beziehen sich auf die legendären siebzig jüdischen Gelehrten, die die Übersetzung bereits im späten 2. Jahrhundert v. Chr. Abgeschlossen haben. Als primäre griechische Übersetzung des Alten Testaments heißt es auch das griechische Alte Testament. Diese Übersetzung wird im Neuen Testament zitiert, besonders in den paulinischen Briefen, aber auch von den Apostolischen Vätern und späteren griechischen Kirchenvätern. Die traditionelle Geschichte ist, dass Ptolemaios II die Übersetzung für die Verwendung durch die vielen alexandrinischen Juden, die nicht fließend in Hebräisch, aber fließend in Koine Griechisch, die die lingua franca von Alexandria, Ägypten und dem östlichen Mittelmeer zu der Zeit war gesponsert. Die Septuaginta sollte nicht mit den sieben oder anderen griechischen Versionen des Alten Testaments verwechselt werden, von denen die meisten nicht als Bruchstücke überleben. Von diesen sind die wichtigsten von Aquila, Symmachus und Theodotion.
