Umgekehrt wird die Short-Position mit einem Verlust ausgeschlossen, falls der Preis eines kurzgeschlossenen Instruments vor dem Rückkauf steigen soll. Der potenzielle Verlust bei einem Leerverkauf ist theoretisch unbegrenzt im Falle eines unbegrenzten Anstiegs des Preises des Instruments, aber in der Praxis wird der kurze Verkäufer verpflichtet sein, Marge oder Sicherheiten zur Deckung von Verlusten und jede Unfähigkeit, dies zu tun, auf einem Rechtzeitige Basis würde dazu führen, dass seine Makler oder Gegenpartei die Position zu liquidieren. In den Wertpapiermärkten muss der Verkäufer in der Regel die Wertpapiere ausleihen, um die Lieferung im Leerverkauf zu bewirken. In einigen Fällen muss der kurze Verkäufer eine Gebühr zahlen, um die Wertpapiere zu leihen und muss zusätzlich den Kreditgeber für Bargeldrenditen, die der Kreditgeber erhalten hätte, wenn die Wertpapiere nicht ausgeliehen worden sind, zurückerstatten.
