Ein Sophist war eine spezifische Art von Lehrer sowohl im alten Griechenland als auch im Römischen Reich. Viele Sophisten spezialisierten sich auf die Verwendung von Werkzeugen der Philosophie und Rhetorik, obwohl andere Sophisten Themen wie Musik, Leichtathletik und Mathematik unterrichteten. Im allgemeinen behaupteten sie, vorwiegend junge Staatsmänner und Adel zu lehren. Es gibt nicht viele Schriften von und über die ersten Sophisten. Die Praxis der frühen Sophisten, Geld für die Erziehung aufzugeben und nur denjenigen, die bezahlen konnten, Weisheit zu geben, führte zu den Verurteilungen, die Sokrates durch Platon in seinen Dialogen gemacht hatte, sowie von Xenophon in Memorabilien und Aristoteles. Herrick schrieb: "In De Oratore beschuldigt Cicero Platon, Weisheit und Beredsamkeit in dem berühmten Angriff der Philosophen auf die Sophisten in Gorgias zu trennen." Die klassische Tradition der Rhetorik und Komposition bezieht sich auf Mehr zu den Philosophen wie Aristoteles, Cicero und Quintilian als zu den Sophisten. Trotz dieser Kritik blühten jedoch viele Sophisten in späteren Perioden, besonders während der Ära der römischen Geschichte, die als Zweite Sophistin bekannt war.
