Die Eichhörnchen Affen sind die New World Affen der Gattung Saimiri. Sie sind die einzige Gattung in der Unterfamilie Saimirinae. Der Name der Gattung Saimiri ist von Tupi Herkunft und wurde auch als englischer Name von frühen Forschern verwendet. Eichhörnchen Affen leben in den tropischen Wäldern von Mittel- und Südamerika in der Baldachinschicht. Die meisten Arten haben parapatrische oder allopathische Bereiche im Amazonasgebiet, während S. oerstedii disjunkthaft in Costa Rica und Panama gefunden wird. Der gemeine Eichhörnchenaffe wird für den Haustierhandel und für medizinische Forschung gefangen genommen, aber es ist nicht bedroht. Zwei Eichhörnchen-Affenarten sind bedroht: Der zentralamerikanische Eichhörnchenaffe und der schwarze Eichhörnchenaffe werden von der IUCN als anfällig eingestuft.
