Stingrays sind eine Gruppe von Strahlen, die knorpelige Fische im Zusammenhang mit Haien sind. Sie sind in der Unterordnung Myliobatoidei der Ordnung Myliobatiformes eingestuft und bestehen aus acht Familien: Hexatrygonidae, Plesiobatidae, Urolophidae, Urotrygonidae, Dasyatidae, Potamotrygonidae, Gymnuridae und Myliobatidae. Die meisten Stachelrochen haben einen oder mehrere Stacheln auf dem Schwanz, die ausschließlich in Selbstverteidigung verwendet werden. Der Stinger kann eine Länge von ca. 35 cm erreichen, und seine Unterseite hat zwei Rillen mit Giftdrüsen. Der Stinger ist mit einer dünnen Schicht von Haut bedeckt, die integumentäre Scheide, in der das Gift konzentriert ist. Ein paar Mitglieder der Unterordnung, wie die Manta-Strahlen und der Stachelschwein-Strahl, haben keine Stachel. Stingrays sind in Küsten-tropischen und subtropischen Meeresgewässern in der ganzen Welt üblich und beinhalten auch Arten, die in wärmeren gemäßigten Ozeanen wie demyatis thetidis, und denen gefunden werden, die im tiefen Ozean wie Plesiobatis daviesi gefunden werden. Der Fluss Stachelrochen, und eine Reihe von Whiptail Stachelrochen, sind auf frisches Wasser beschränkt.
