In der Fiktion ist ein Subplot ein sekundärer Strang der Handlung, der eine unterstützende Seitengeschichte für jede Geschichte oder das Hauptplot ist. Subplots können sich mit den Hauptplots verbinden, entweder in Zeit und Ort oder in thematischer Bedeutung. Subplots beinhalten oft unterstützende Charaktere, die neben dem Protagonisten oder Antagonisten. Subplots unterscheiden sich von der Hauptpläne, indem sie weniger von der Aktion aufnehmen, wobei weniger signifikante Ereignisse auftreten, mit weniger Auswirkungen auf die "Welt" der Arbeit und auf weniger wichtige Charaktere auftreten. Beim Screenwriting wird ein Subplot als "B-Geschichte" oder "C-Story" bezeichnet.
