Sultan
Sultan ist ein edler Titel mit mehreren historischen Bedeutungen. Ursprünglich war es eine arabische Sprache abstrakte Substantiv, die "Stärke", "Autorität", "Herrschaft" aus dem verbalen Nomen سلطة sulṭah, bedeutet "Autorität" oder "Macht". Später wurde es als Titel bestimmter Herrscher verwendet, die beinahe die volle Souveränität praktisch beanspruchten, ohne das Gesamtkalifat zu beanspruchen oder sich auf einen mächtigen Gouverneur einer Provinz im Kalifat zu beziehen. Die Dynastie und die von einem Sultan regierten Länder werden als Sultanat bezeichnet. Eine feminine Form, die von den Westlern benutzt wird, ist Sultana oder Sultanah; Obwohl das Styling die Rollen der Frauen der Sultane falsch macht. In einer ähnlichen Verwendung könnte die Frau eines deutschen Feldmarschalls Feldmarschallin gestylt werden. Die seltenen weiblichen Führer in der muslimischen Geschichte sind richtig als "Sultaninen" bekannt. Doch im Sultanat von Sulu ist die Frau des Sultans als "Panguian" gestylt. Unter den modernen erblichen Herrschern, die ihre weltliche Autorität unter der Rechtsstaatlichkeit betonen wollen, wird der Begriff allmählich durch König Datu in Meranal ersetzt.
