Sumatra, ist eine Insel im westlichen Indonesien und Teil der Sunda Inseln. Es ist die größte Insel, die ganz in Indonesien und die sechstgrößte Insel der Welt bei 480.847,74 km2 ist, mit einer aktuellen Bevölkerung von über 50 Millionen. Die größte Stadt ist Medan mit über 4 Millionen in ihrer Metropolregion. Sumatra ist eine langgestreckte Landmasse, die eine diagonale Nordwest-Südostachse überspannt. Der Indische Ozean grenzt im Westen, Nordwesten und Südwesten von Sumatra mit der Inselkette Simeulue, Nias und Mentawai an der südwestlichen Küste. Auf der nordöstlichen Seite trennt die schmale Straße von Malacca die Insel von der malaiischen Halbinsel, eine Erweiterung des eurasischen Kontinents. Im Südosten trennt die schmale Sunda Strait Sumatra von Java. Die nördliche Spitze von Sumatra grenzt an die Andaman Inseln, während auf der unteren Ostseite die Inseln Bangka und Belitung, die Karimata-Straße und das Java-Meer liegen. Die Bukit Barisan Berge, die mehrere aktive Vulkane enthalten, bilden das Rückgrat der Insel, während die nordöstlichen Seiten über dem Tiefland mit Sümpfen, Mangroven und komplexen Flusssystemen liegen.
