Der Nettoeffekt ist eine innere Kraft an seiner Oberfläche, die bewirkt, dass sich Wasser verhält, als ob seine Oberfläche mit einer gestreckten elastischen Membran bedeckt wäre. Wegen der relativ hohen Anziehung von Wassermolekülen für einander hat Wasser eine hohe Oberflächenspannung im Vergleich zu der der meisten anderen Flüssigkeiten. Die Oberflächenspannung ist ein wichtiger Faktor für das Phänomen der Kapillarität. Die Oberflächenspannung hat das Maß der Kraft pro Längeneinheit oder der Energie pro Flächeneinheit. Die beiden sind gleichwertig, aber wenn man sich auf die Energie pro Flächeneinheit bezieht, nutzt man den Begriff Oberflächenenergie - was ein allgemeiner Begriff ist, in dem Sinne, daß er auch für Feststoffe und nicht nur für Flüssigkeiten gilt.

Because of the relatively high attraction of water molecules for each other, water has a high surface tension compared to that of most other liquids. Surface tension is an important factor in the phenomenon of capillarity. Surface tension has the dimension of force per unit length, or of energy per unit area. The two are equivalent—but when referring to energy per unit of area, people use the term surface energy—which is a more general term in the sense that it applies also to solids and not just liquids.
