Seeschwalbe
Seeschwalben sind Seevögel in der Familie Sternidae, die eine weltweite Verbreitung haben und normalerweise in der Nähe des Meeres, der Flüsse oder der Feuchtgebiete gefunden werden. Früher als eine Unterfamilie der Möwen, Laridae betrachtet, sind sie jetzt in der Regel mit vollem Familienstand und in elf Gattungen unterteilt. Sie sind schlanke, leicht gebaute Vögel mit langen Gabelschwänzen, schmalen Flügeln, langen Rechnungen und relativ kurzen Beinen. Ihr Flug ist lebhaft und anmutig. Die meisten Arten sind blassgrau oben und weiß unten, mit einer kontrastierenden schwarzen Kappe an den Kopf, aber die Sumpfseeschwalben, die Inka-Seeschwalbe und einige Noddies haben ein dunkles Gefieder für mindestens einen Teil des Jahres. Die Geschlechter sind identisch im Aussehen, aber junge Vögel sind leicht von Erwachsenen zu unterscheiden. Seeschwalben haben ein Nicht-Zuchtgefieder, das gewöhnlich eine weiße Stirn und eine viel reduzierte schwarze Kappe beinhaltet. Die Seeschwalben sind Vögel offener Lebensräume, die typischerweise in lärmenden Kolonien züchten und ihre Eier auf nacktem Boden mit wenig oder gar keinem Nest legen. Allerdings bauen die Sumpf-Seeschwalben schwimmende Nester aus der Vegetation in ihren Feuchtgebieten, und einige Arten bauen einfache Nester in Bäumen, auf Klippen oder in Felsspalten.
