Thulium
Thulium ist ein chemisches Element, das das Symbol Tm und die Ordnungszahl 69 hat. Es ist das dreizehnte und antepenultative Element in der Lanthanidreihe. Wie die anderen Lanthanide ist die häufigste Oxidationsstufe +3, gesehen in ihren Oxid, Halogeniden und anderen Verbindungen. In wässriger Lösung, wie Verbindungen von anderen späten Lanthaniden, bilden lösliche Thuliumverbindungen Komplexe mit neun Wassermolekülen. Im Jahre 1879 trennte der schwedische Chemiker Per Theodor Cleve in der Seltenen Erbia noch zwei noch unbekannte Komponenten, die er Holmia und Thulia nannte: das waren die Oxide von Holmium und Thulium. Eine relativ reine Probe von Thuliummetall wurde erst 1911 erhalten. Thulium ist die zweithäufigste der Lanthanide nach Promethium, die nur in Spurenmengen auf der Erde gefunden wird. Es ist ein leicht bearbeitbares Metall mit einem hellen, silbrig-grauen Glanz. Es ist ziemlich weich und langsam trübt in der Luft. Trotz seines hohen Preises und ihrer Rarität wird Thulium als Strahlungsquelle in tragbaren Röntgengeräten und in Festkörperlasern eingesetzt. Es hat keine signifikante biologische Rolle und ist nicht besonders giftig.
