Timbuktu
Timbuktu, früher auch Timbuctoo und Timbuktoo geschrieben, ist eine Stadt in der westafrikanischen Nation von Mali, die 20 km nördlich des Flusses Niger am südlichen Rand der Sahara-Wüste liegt. Die Stadt ist die Hauptstadt der Region Timbuktu, einer der acht Verwaltungsregionen von Mali. Es hatte eine Bevölkerung von 54.453 bei der Volkszählung 2009. Als saisonale Siedlung begann Timbuktu Anfang des 12. Jahrhunderts zu einer ständigen Besiedlung. Nach einer Verschiebung der Handelsrouten blühte Timbuktu aus dem Handel mit Salz, Gold, Elfenbein und Sklaven. Es wurde Teil des Mali Reiches Anfang des 14. Jahrhunderts. In der ersten Hälfte des 15. Jahrhunderts übernahmen die Tuareg-Stämme die Stadt für eine kurze Zeit, bis das wachsende Songhai-Reich die Stadt im Jahre 1468 aufnahm. Eine marokkanische Armee besiegte den Songhai im Jahre 1591 und machte Timbuktu anstatt Gao, ihre Hauptstadt . Die Eindringlinge gründeten eine neue herrschende Klasse, die Arma, die nach 1612 praktisch unabhängig von Marokko wurde. Allerdings war das goldene Zeitalter der Stadt vorbei und es trat eine lange Zeit des Niedergangs ein.
