Tocopherol
Tocopherole sind eine Klasse von organisch-chemischen Verbindungen, von denen viele Vitamin E-Aktivität haben. Weil die Vitaminaktivität erstmals 1936 von einem diätetischen Fruchtbarkeitsfaktor bei Ratten identifiziert wurde, erhielt man den Namen "Tocopherol" aus den griechischen Wörtern "τόκος" und "φέρειν", dh in Summe "eine Schwangerschaft tragen" mit dem Endung "-ol" bedeutet seinen Status als chemischer Alkohol. Α-Tocopherol ist die Hauptquelle in Ergänzungen und in der europäischen Ernährung, wo die wichtigsten diätetischen Quellen sind Oliven-und Sonnenblumenöle, während γ-Tocopherol ist die häufigste Form in der amerikanischen Ernährung aufgrund einer höheren Aufnahme von Sojabohnen und Maisöl . Tocotrienole, die verwandte Verbindungen sind, haben auch Vitamin E-Aktivität. Alle diese verschiedenen Derivate mit Vitaminaktivität können korrekt als "Vitamin E" bezeichnet werden. Tocopherole und Tocotrienole sind fettlösliche Antioxidantien, scheinen aber auch viele andere Funktionen im Körper zu haben.
