Tunnel
Ein Tunnel ist ein Untergrund- oder Unterwasserkanal, eingeschlossen außer für Eingang und Ausgang, häufig an jedem Ende. Ein Tunnel kann für Fuß- oder Fahrzeugstraßenverkehr, für den Schienenverkehr oder für einen Kanal sein. Die zentralen Teile eines schnellen Transitnetzes befinden sich meist im Tunnel. Utility-Tunnel werden für die Verlegung von Dampf-, Kaltwasser-, Strom- oder Telekommunikations-Kabel verwendet, sowie die Verbindung von Gebäuden für bequeme Passage von Personen und Ausrüstung. Geheime Tunnel sind für militärische Zwecke gebaut, oder von Zivilisten zum Schmuggeln von Waffen, Schmuggelware oder Menschen. Spezielle Tunnel, wie z. B. Wildniskreuzungen, sind so gebaut, dass Wildtiere die menschlichen Barrieren sicher überqueren können.
