Die asymmetrische Einheit wird durch Symmetrieoperationen in die Einheitszelle übersetzt und das resultierende Kristallgitter wird durch Wiederholung der Einheitszelle unendlich in 3-Dimensionen aufgebaut. Muster sind auf den Punkten eines Gitters angeordnet, die ein Array von Punkten ist, die sich periodisch in drei Dimensionen wiederholen. Die Längen der Kanten einer Einheitszelle und die Winkel zwischen ihnen werden die Gitterparameter genannt. Die Symmetrieeigenschaften des Kristalls sind in seiner Raumgruppe verkörpert.
