Vihara
Vihara ist der Sanskrit und Pali Begriff für ein buddhistisches Kloster. Es bedeutete ursprünglich "einen abgelegenen Ort, um zu gehen", und verwies auf "Wohnungen" oder "Schutzhütten", die von wandernden Mönchen während der Regenzeit verwendet wurden. Der nordindische Staat von Bihar leitet seinen Namen von dem Wort "vihara" ab, vermutlich wegen der Fülle der buddhistischen Klöster in diesem Gebiet. Das Wort "Vihara" wurde auch in Malaiien ausgeliehen, wo es "Biara" geschrieben wird und ein Kloster oder andere nichtmuslimische Kultstätten bezeichnet. In Thailand und China hat "vihara" eine schmalere Bedeutung und bezeichnet eine kleine Schreinhalle oder ein Rückzugshaus. Es heißt "Wihan" in Thai und ein "Vihear" in Khmer. In Burmese, Wihara, bedeutet "Kloster", aber das gebürtige birmanische Wort Kyaung wird bevorzugt.
