Das Walroß ist ein großes, geflipptes Meeressäugetier mit einer diskontinuierlichen Verteilung über den Nordpol im Arktischen Ozean und die subarktischen Meere der Nordhalbkugel. Das Walroß ist die einzige lebende Spezies in der Familie Odobenidae und der Odobenus-Gattung. Diese Spezies gliedert sich in drei Unterarten: das Atlantische Walroß, das im Atlantischen Ozean wohnt, das pazifische Walroß, das im Pazifischen Ozean lebt, und O. r. Laptevi, der im Laptev-Meer des Arktischen Ozeans lebt. Erwachsene Walrosse sind leicht erkannt durch ihre prominenten Stoßzähne, Schnurrhaare und Bauschigkeit. Erwachsene Männchen im Pazifik können mehr als 2.000 kg wiegen und unter den Flossenfüllungen nur von den beiden Arten von Elefanten-Siegeln überschritten werden. Walrosse leben meist in flachen Gewässern oberhalb der Festlandsockel und verbringen erhebliche Mengen ihres Lebens auf dem Meereis auf der Suche nach benthischen Muscheln zu essen. Walrosse sind relativ langlebige, soziale Tiere, und sie gelten als "Keystone-Spezies" in den arktischen Meeresgebieten.
