Jedoch wird plastische Verformung, wie z. B. Fließspannung, von der Verschleißdefinition ausgeschlossen, wenn sie keine relative Gleitbewegung und einen Kontakt gegen eine andere Oberfläche aufweist, trotz der Möglichkeit der Materialentfernung, da sie dann die relative Gleitwirkung einer anderen Oberfläche fehlt. Der Aufprallverschleiß ist in Wirklichkeit eine kurze Gleitbewegung, bei der zwei feste Körper in einem außergewöhnlich kurzen Zeitintervall zusammenwirken.
