Das Zip-Laufwerk ist ein mittelkapazitives, entfernbares Disketten-Speichersystem, das Ende 1994 von Iomega eingeführt wurde. Ursprünglich starteten Zip-Disks mit Kapazitäten von 100 MB, aber spätere Versionen erhöhten diese auf erstes 250 MB und dann 750 MB. Das Format wurde die beliebteste der superfloppy Produkte, die eine Nische in den späten 1990er Jahren tragbaren Speicher-Markt gefüllt. Allerdings war es niemals beliebt genug, um die 3,5-Zoll-Diskette zu ersetzen, noch konnte sie jemals mit der Speichergröße über wiederbeschreibbare CDs und später wiederbeschreibbare DVDs übereinstimmen. USB-Flash-Laufwerke erwies sich letztlich als das besser wiederbeschreibbare Speichermedium in der Öffentlichkeit aufgrund der nahezu ubiquity von USB-Ports auf Personalcomputern und bald darauf wegen der weit größeren Speichergrößen angeboten. Zip-Laufwerke fielen aus der Bevorzugung für Massen-tragbare Lagerung in den frühen 2000er Jahren. Die Zip-Marke enthielt später interne und externe CD-Brenner, die als Zip-650 oder Zip-CD bekannt waren und die keine Beziehung zum Zip-Laufwerk hatten.
