Ein Atomkern ist ein kleiner, dichter Teil aus Kernen und Mesonen im Zentrum eines Atoms. Der Durchmesser beträgt etwa 1,6 fm bis 15 fm. Diese Größe entspricht 1 / 145.000 bis 1 / 23.000 der gesamten Atomgröße. Die meisten Atommassen sind die Masse der Protonen und Neutronen, die den Kern bilden, und die Masse der Elektronen um den Kern ist sehr klein. Die Masse der Elektronen auf der Außenseite des Kerns ist etwa die Protonenmasse, so dass die Masse des Atoms die Summe der Masse des Kerns ist, dh die Anzahl der Protonen und die Anzahl der Neutronen. Die Anzahl der Protonen in einem Atom ist die gleiche, aber die Anzahl der Neutronenisotope mit verschiedenen Atomkernen ist vorhanden, und ihre Häufigkeit existiert in einer im wesentlichen konstanten Rate unabhängig von der Lage oder Art des Materials.
