In der Chemie und Physik ist das Atom das kleinste Teilchen, das im chemischen Element gefunden werden kann, ohne seine chemischen Eigenschaften zu verändern. Das Wort Atom bedeutet ursprünglich das kleinste teilchenlose Teilchen, das gefunden werden kann, aber sobald der Begriff eine spezifische Bedeutung in der Wissenschaft hat, können die gefundenen Atome weiter unterteilt werden und bestehen aus subatomaren Teilchen. Die meisten Atome enthalten drei Arten von subatomaren Teilchen, die ihre äußeren Eigenschaften bestimmen: ▪ Elektronen, die eine negative Ladung haben und zwischen diesen drei Teilchen am kleinsten sind ▪ die Protonen, die eine positive Ladung haben und etwa 1836 mal größer sind als die Elektronen; und ▪ Neutronen, die nicht geladen sind und etwa 1839 mal größer sind als Elektronen. Protonen und Neutronen verschmelzen zu festen und großen Atomkernen und werden zusammen Nukleonen genannt. Elektronen bilden größere Elektronenwolken um den Kern herum. Jedes Atom hat eine Anzahl von verschiedenen subatomaren Partikeln. Die Anzahl der Protonen in einem Atom bestimmt das Element des Atoms.
