Makia ist eine sekundäre Vegetationsformation, die in feuchteren Lebensräumen im Mittelmeerraum vorkommt. Wiele z olejków eterycznych owych roślin ma zastosowanie w medycynie. Okres wegetacji przypada na wiosnę, gdy ilość opadów jest największa. Na glebach wapiennych makia przechodzi w garig. Od makii swą nazwę przyjęli maquis, francuscy partyzanci z czasów II wojny światowej.
